Policy Committee (PC) plays a key role in the development of BVA policy across a wide range of animal health and welfare, public health, and veterinary professional issues, reporting to BVA Council. PC works closely with BVA Officers and the BVA team to:

• develop policy positions on priority issues, working in partnership with relevant species divisions and by convening task and finish working groups
• horizon scan for the hot topics of interest to the profession
• recommend and approve our policy, lobbying and campaigning priorities for each Association year
• advise on our responses to consultations from Government, the devolved administrations and other key stakeholders

Policy Committee activity 

PC is currently:

• closely following the Competition and Markets Authority review of veterinary services for household pets and advising on our response.
• working with the relevant divisions to produce joint positions on identified priority animal welfare problems, including the use of animals in performance sport and farrowing crates for pigs.
• advising on the progress of two working groups, one on gene-editing and one on diet and nutrition for dogs and cats.

PC has recently:

• developed our positions on canine breeding services, and Brucella canis
• updated our position on breeding for health and temperament in the context of breed specific legislation and extreme breeding for aggression
