BVA Structure
The BVA is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered company, limited by guarantee.
BVA's objectives and powers are set out in its Memorandum and Articles of Association, which is a legal document and is available for members to download as a pdf here. The principal objectives are:
The promotion and advancement of veterinary and allied sciences.
The protection and support of the veterinary profession.
Lobbying government and parliament.
The collection and dissemination of news and information.
The provision of patronage for the profession.
The publication of material relating to veterinary science.
Directorates
The BVA has three main areas of activity; Business Operations, Veterinary Policy and Publications. Each area has a specific role, but all work together to implement the strategic direction of the Board. The management decisions for the Association are the responsibility of the Secretary General, Henrietta Alderman.
Business Operations
Business Operations is responsible for the day-today running and support of the BVA. It encompasses membership, finance, members' services through the Members' Services Group, business development and marketing, website, human resources, house management, administrative support, the BVA/Kennel Club Canine Health Schemes and the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation.
Veterinary Policy
Veterinary Policy is responsible for the coordination, administration and formulation of veterinary policy. The directorate ensures that key veterinary issues are raised at the appropriate levels to influence the formulation of policy relevant to the profession. This is achieved with the help of BVA Officers, the Veterinary Policy Group, BVA Council and key experts. Matters relating to ethics and welfare are also considered through the Ethics and Welfare Group within the directorate. Public relations also come under this directorate and it is responsible for communicating the views of the profession to government and the media for lobbying on behalf of the profession.
The work of the Overseas Group and links with European and international veterinary associations are also housed within Veterinary Policy.
BVA Publications
BVA Publications is responsible for the production of The Veterinary Record, In Practice and various other publications for the Association. BVA Publications is also responsible for www.bvapublications.com, which offers a huge resource of archived material from both journals.
