BVA Council

In this section you can find out more about the British Veterinary Association (BVA) Council

Council represents BVA members and is the key debating chamber within the organisation. All BVA committees report to Council.

Role of Council

Council’s primary role is

  • to represent the members’ views on matters of veterinary policy
  • to advise the Board on matters of veterinary policy
  • to appoint four members as Directors of the Board
  • to approve new members of the Association and to recommend honorary members, honorary associates and life members for election
  • to recommend for election the Council’s preferred candidates for President and President-Elect

Composition of Council

Council is the representative body of the BVA, and is comprised as follows
  • 3 executive Officers
  • 3 immediate Past-Presidents
  • 9 English regional representatives
  • 1 representative of Northern Ireland
  • 1 representative of Scotland
  • 1 representative of Wales
  • 1 representative of Scottish Branch
  • 1 representative of Welsh Branch
  • 14 specialist division representatives
  • the chairs of the 5 standing committees
  • 2 recent graduates

2 affiliate representatives from BVNA and VPMA also sit on Council as non-voting members.

Each representative will be elected for a term of three years. At the end of three years a representative will be eligible for election for a second term of three years.

The Chairman of the Board may attend Council. All other requests for attendance at Council are made through the President.
