Background

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)

  • is an acute infectious disease characterised by fever and the development of blisters
  • is mainly in the mouth and on the feet
  • is caused by aphthovirus and affects all cloven-footed animals
  • spreads rapidly and is very resistant
  • is not fatal but seriously affects the general health and productivity of farm animals

It is a notifiable disease and suspect cases must be notified to the local State Veterinary Service Divisional Veterinary Manager
