Background
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
- is an acute infectious disease characterised by fever and the development of blisters
- is mainly in the mouth and on the feet
- is caused by aphthovirus and affects all cloven-footed animals
- spreads rapidly and is very resistant
- is not fatal but seriously affects the general health and productivity of farm animals
It is a notifiable disease and suspect cases must be notified to the local State Veterinary Service Divisional Veterinary Manager
