Media Training

Suitable for beginners as well as those members who wish to refresh their media skills, the BVA media training course is run by a professional journalist, well-versed in both radio and TV.

The BVA has been running one-day Media Training Courses for some years, initially aimed at BVA and Divisional Officers and spokesmen, but now open to any BVA member.

The training is designed to instil confidence and to teach participants all the techniques for handling radio, TV and print media interviews in order that you can present yourself and what you have to say to the very best advantage. It commences at 9.30 am and each medium is first discussed, then practised in a studio set-up and later analysed ensuring participants get ‘hands-on’ experience.  Lunch is provided and the course ends at around 5.30 pm.

The ongoing number of radio and TV programmes devoted to all things animal and veterinary provide an ideal opportunity for the profession to promote itself and the art of veterinary science.

This is an intensely practical course and the subject matter is tailored to suit individual participants and their particular areas of expertise.  A video and information pack is handed to participants at the end of the course. Here you can read a short report of the media training day in March.

The next course on 11 June 2008 is now fully booked. The next likely date will be in September/October.

Cost and Location

The cost per participant is £335 + VAT for BVA members and non-members pay £400 + VAT with a maximum of six persons per course.  It takes place in central London with the nearest underground station usually being Kings Cross.

For your information BVA is, unfortunately, unable to provide funding for the course.

Recent participants have commented:

“I thought that the course was excellent. It addressed all the issues that I wanted to know about. The presenter was very helpful, made the exercises very relevant to all our interests. Top marks.”

“Nadin, the course was excellent and very cost effective. You should keep this course available to BVA members.  Kay clearly had expertise and was an excellent trainer, her insight into veterinary matters was obvious and this was important.”

“I enjoyed the training very much and more importantly, left believing I had learned useful background and techniques to deal with media if/when the need arises.”

“The day was very useful indeed. I've had no previous experience of media and it was a useful insight into how it all goes on. The tutor was clear, confident and helpful at all stages. I learned a lot and would recommend the course to others.”
