Conferences and events

2011 marked the official declaration that rinderpest has been eradicated worldwide.  After smallpox, this is only the second viral disease to have been eliminated by man.  The BVA is delighted that this monumental achievement was the subject of the Wooldridge Memorial Lecture given at BVA Congress 2011 by Dr Peter Roeder who led the Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme from 2000-2007.

To further illustrate how vets and veterinary science can have a global impact the Overseas Group organised a full day’s programme at BVA Congress where we explored current issues concerning livestock and global food security, veterinary involvement in disaster relief and management, as well as a session celebrating 100 BVA overseas travel grants.

BVA members can download the presentations and MP3s from this session.  The Wooldridge can be downloaded from the Contentious issues page.

Partnerships

Our strength lies in our ability to network and collaborate. Much of this work is undertaken through the BVA Overseas Association, an informally structured group whose members have an interest in overseas activities.

The BVA Overseas Group has links with many international organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and works closely with the

all important catalysts in the international exchange of veterinary skills, education and knowledge.

All members of the Overseas Group have experience of veterinary work in developing countries. The chairman of the Group is Karen Reed.
