Shelter near Ocho Rios for stray and abandoned animals. Provides basic veterinary care and runs a spay/neuter clinic. Welcomes short term volunteer vets, nurses and students.

African Conservation Experience (A.C.E)
ACE plays an active role in the conservation and maintenance of the biodiversity and environment unique to southern Africa. Shimongwe Wildlife Veterinary Experience provides the opportunity to work alongside a wildlife vet in the field.

Animal Aid
Animal Aid is a charitable organisation devoted to achieving a paradigm shift in support of animal rights in India and, indeed, all over the world.

Street dog sterilisation and rabies inoculation; 24 hour rescue for ownerless animals covering species ranging from bullocks to birds; community education and animal advocacy combine to make Animal Aid a lively place where dreams come true.

Animal Balance
Animal Balance works with the local authorities to organise community-based sterilisation programs for cats and dogs on islands and areas where the local ecology is fragile, such as on the Galapagos Islands, Dominican Republic and the Samoan Islands.

Animal Care in Egypt (ACE)
Animal care centre at El-Gouahera, Luxor – treats over 100 animals daily – mostly horses and donkeys, but also camels, goats, sheep, water buffalo, dogs and cats, poultry and wildlife.

Animal Kingdom Foundation
The AKF’s Animal Rehabilitation and Rescue Centre in the Philippines looks after the dogs that have been rescued from the illegal trade in dogmeat.  They would welcome voluntary assistance from vets and vet students.

Animal SOS
Set up by a group of animal welfare workers from the UK primarily to help suffering street dogs and other stray animals in Sri Lanka.  The charity is currently trying to raise funds to buy land on which to build a refuge and veterinary centre.

Animals Lebanon
Animals Lebanon is a registered charity working to introduce animal welfare issues to Lebanon, with a focus on TNR projects and bringing animals and people together.

Animals Worldwide
Animals Worldwide has been formed to help small sanctuaries and re-homing centres, to assist with catch/neuter/return projects and to urge the travel companies and resorts to make sure animals lovers do enjoy their holidays.

Asociación Hondureña Protectora de los Animales y su Ambiente (AHPRA)

Asoc. Humanitaria San Fransisco De Asis (AHSFA)
AHSFA is dedicated to improving animal and community welfare in the rural villages of Northern Peru.  The charity runs a small shelter in Colan concentrating mainly on spay and neuter - and education in schools on animal wellbeing.

AHSFA also works with horses, donkeys and mules in nearby rural villages. They would welcome volunteer vets, vet students and VNs.

Atigaro Project
Capture-neuter-release programme involving stray dogs and cats on the resort island of Phuket, Thailand - set up by Australian veterinarian, Dr Alison Montgomery. It is designed to involve local and visiting veterinarians.

Baan Unrak Animal Sanctuary
Clinic set up to neuter, vaccinate and treat the local dog population in Sangklaburi, North West Thailand

Bali Dogs
Working to bring relief to both the immediate suffering of the ‘street dogs’ of Bali and the underlying long term problems that contribute to the situation. There is a ‘visiting vet’ programme.  Volunteer vets, nurses and students are welcome.

Born Free Foundation
Founded in 1984 to investigate, expose and alleviate animal suffering in zoos and to promote the protection of wildlife in its natural habitat.

Brooke
Founded in 1934 to provide free veterinary care for the working animals of the poor in Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan and India.

Building New Hope (Casa Lupita)
The small animal clinic, Casa Lupita, has been set up to address the overpopulation of dogs and cats in Granada, Nicaragua.  They would welcome veterinary volunteers.

Care For the Wild International (CWI)
CWI is an animal welfare and conservation charity that funds practical projects around the world.

They make areas safe from poachers, rehabilitate sick or injured animals and provide sanctuary for those who can not return to the wild.

CWI also act as a global voice for wildlife through research, education and advocacy and expose.

CLAW and Mdzananda Animal Clinics
These IFAW-funded companion animal projects in underprivileged areas in Johannesburg and Cape Town would welcome volunteer veterinary help. The baboon rehabilitation project, CARE, would also welcome volunteers. 

Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA)
CUPA is the largest and most active animal welfare organisation in Bangalore, India mainly caring for small and large animals, mainly domestic.

Dogs Trust
Dogs Trust protect and defend all dogs from abuse, cruelty, abandonment and any form of mistreatment, both in the UK and abroad.

The NCDL has forged links with groups of people attempting to improve animal welfare in Eastern Europe and is involved in setting up neutering clinics in several Eastern European countries.

Dogstar Foundation
The Dogstar Foundation was founded in 2006 to provide free veterinary care to dogs and cats in the Kegalle area of Sri Lanka and has expanded to other areas via a series of mobile clinics

The Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary is the largest registered donkey and mule charity in the world.  No donkey is ever sold and all are guaranteed care for the rest of their natural lives.  It educates on donkey welfare.  The Donkey Sanctuary also awards travel grants to support UK veterinary undergraduates visiting a project site in Mexico, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya or India.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is an international non-government organisation based in the UK, respected world-wide for its pioneering achievements in wildlife conservation and education.

Elephant Help Foundation
Mobile elephant clinic, Phuket, Thailand, assists elephants working in the tourist trade. Welcomes voluntary veterinary assistance.

Elephant Nature Park
Elephant sanctuary in northern Thailand for ex-logging elephants and their mahouts.  The project welcomes volunteers – vets, vet nurses, students and others.

Esther Honey Foundation (EHF)
EHF is the only international organisation working exclusively to control animal populations on the Cook Islands.  Relies on voluntary staff.

FARM Africa
Works with poor rural African farmers and herders – provides practical help, enabling them to produce more food for their families.

Fiji Society for Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)
Set up to take care of Fiji’s population of cats and dogs.

Friendicoes Society for the Eradication of Cruelty to Animals (SECA)
Based in New Delhi, India, they provide a city shelter & hospital;  animal ambulances & rescue;  mobile clinics for working horses and donkeys; spay/neuter project for dogs and cats;  adoption;  country sanctuary.

Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT)
GHDT aims to reduce rural poverty by increasing productivity of working horses and donkeys through animal welfare and management education.  The Trust appreciates voluntary veterinary assistance from time to time.

Goa Animal Welfare Trust (GAWT)
GAWT travels all over South Goa collecting stray dogs and cats that are in need of help from the beaches and streets.

Greek Animal Welfare Fund (GAWF)
Promote animal welfare in Greece by running mobile clinics around Greece, neutering feral cat colonies, subsidising veterinary treatment for poor owners and supporting shelters.

Greek Cat Welfare Society
UK registered charity helping stray cats in Greece. Seeks volunteer vets for short term veterinary work, mostly neutering.

Grenada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA)
The GSPCA, in collaboration with the University of St George’s Veterinary School, provides veterinary care for the local animal population.

A newly renovated, well-equipped teaching hospital in St George’s is run alongside a mobile clinic, donated by World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Green Volunteers
The world guide and information network to voluntary work in nature conservation.

Harvest Help
UK registered charity working in poor villages in Zambia to help people improve their own lives and prospects.

It concentrates its work in Central Southern Africa. Of particular interest is the Namwala Cattle Project in Zambia.

Help in Suffering (HIS)
Animal shelter in Jaipur – involved in rescue of injured animals from city’s streets; clinic to treat sick animals of local poor; rabies control programme – spaying and vaccinating street dogs.

i-to-i projects
Helps to locate workers for animal welfare projects in developing countries that cannot afford to pay for all the staff they need.

There are currently vacancies in the field of veterinary care, entomology and animal welfare – for example, in projects in Ecuador, Guatemala, Sri Lanka, Galapagos Islands.

In Defense of Animals (IDA)
Founded by American vet Dr Sheri Speede in 1999, the IDA’s Sanaga-Yong Centre is home to 57 chimpanzees, mainly orphans - victims of the illegal trade in bushmeat.The sanctuary is looking for experienced veterinary volunteers with a flexible attitude; experience with primates is not a pre-requisite.The ability to speak French certainly an advantage. There is a well-equipped vet clinic.  Volunteers will be given accommodation and food on-site.

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA)
Aims to provide help for companion animals worldwide, with its first project focusing on a Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programme on Sabah, Borneo. Would welcome volunteer vets and nurses.

International Animal Rescue (IAR)
IAR is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of animals suffering fear and distress worldwide.

It specialises in running sterilisation and vaccination programmes to control the population and spread of disease among stray cats and dogs.

At its veterinary clinic in Goa, India, the team of vets also treats indigenous wildlife, including rescued monkeys and elephants – as well as the many sacred cows.

International Primate Protection League UK
IPPL is dedicated to protecting all primates, whether wild or captive, anywhere in the world.

International Veterinary Assistance Inc. (IVA)
Promotes humane management of stray and feral companion animals abroad. Conducts volunteer-assisted spay and neuter clinics.

A recent project involved assisting the introduction of humane stray management in St Lucia. There are also IVA supported clinics in Anguilla and St Eustatius.

International Wildlife Coalition Trust
Based in the Philippines, IWCT works to end illegal dog trade in the Far East and rescue dogs from traders.

Charity has a centre with a veterinary clinic and a full-time vet but welcomes volunteers with help from vets and vet nurses.  Those interested would have to fund their own air fare but they would be met at the airport and provided with lodgings during their stay.

Jane Goodall Institute (UK) for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation
Supports and expands research into the behaviour of chimpanzees throughout their rapidly decreasing range in Africa; to improve and enrich the lives of captive chimpanzees worldwide; to establish conservation education programmes, both in the UK and in Africa.

JBF (Scotland) – supporting animal welfare in India
JBF, Scotland, and JBF, India, have been working together to help relieve the suffering of many of Delhi's cows and buffalo.

JBF operates mobile cattle clinic which provides remedial treatments to cattle for illness, injuries, hoof problems etc.  They would welcome voluntary veterinary help.

Jeevashram Animal Shelter
Founded in 1990 to create a happy and healthy environment for unwanted animals. Shelter in Delhi, mainly concerned with the ever-increasing street animal population; running animal birth control programme for dogs and cats.  Would welcome volunteers and can provide accommodation and food.

Karuna Society for Animals and Nature
Registered non-profit organisation involved in animal care and organic farming at Puttaparthi, Central South India.  Welcomes volunteers.

Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre
Project to manage and treat the stray dog population in Kathmandu.  Would welcome veterinary volunteers to assist at the clinic.

Kismet Account
Kismet Account is one of the most prolific overseas cat neutering charities, neutering over 800 animals each year.

While neutering remains a key objective, raising awareness of the problem and training local volunteers to use traps and equipment correctly remains an important goal.

They often need veterinary volunteers with at least 18 months small animal experience, to help on a short-term basis with its projects at various locations across Europe, for example, Gibraltar, Portugal, Canaries.  There are no placements for students.

Koh Tao Clinic
Veterinary clinic on island of Koh Tao -  neutering, vaccination, education.  Volunteers would be welcome.

Kyrenia Animal Rescue
Set up to help animals of Northern Cyprus. Neutering and re-homing campaign.

Lassie - Langkawi Animal Shelter & Sanctuary Foundation (Malaysia)
The Foundation needs volunteer vets to help with neutering and general veterinary work at the sanctuary on the Malaysian island of Langkawi.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a wild animal rescue, rehabilitation and education facility.  It recognises that wildlife conservation cannot be addressed without also looking at the pressures facing local communities. There are many different projects for veterinary and non-veterinary volunteers.

Marchig Animal Welfare Trust
The object of the Trust are to protect animals and promote and encourage practical work in preventing animal cruelty and the relief of animal suffering.

Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF)
Works to improve the care, protection and treatment of elephants in Sri Lanka and has also established a Mobile Veterinary Unit which is called out to provide treatment for elephants in need all over the island.  MEF welcomes veterinary surgeons, veterinary students and veterinary nurses to its volunteer programme.

Morris Animal Foundation (US)
Projects include the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, Rwanda.

Oxfam
Work with poor people, regardless of race or religion, in their struggle against hunger, disease, exploitation and poverty in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East through relief, development and research overseas and public education at home.

PAWS (Protection of Animals Welfare Society) - Mauritius
PAWS run sterilisation campaigns, provide education in schools, find suitable homes of unwanted pets (mostly dogs).  WSPA and the Marchig Foundation have donated to them a fully kitted-out mobile ambulance, drugs and equipment.

Looking for vets – preferably for a minimum of six months – to help with mass sterilisation campaign of dogs and cats.  PAWS will provide accommodation and a daily living allowance while on the island and will also provide a motor scooter for personal use and will assist with other transport needs.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.8 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

PETA India
Small programme to alleviate the suffering of some animals made to work for the sugar mills in Sangli, Maharashtra, India.  To focus on identifying the factors that are causing the animals to suffer, e.g. poor nutrition, husbandry, cart/harness design and try to eliminate them, education programme to make workers aware of importance of treating the animals humanely.

People for Animals, Orissa
Animal Birth Control programme - targeted to sterilise and immunise about 12000 stray dogs depending on funds.  Looking for experienced volunteer to give guidance to the team.

Phangan Animal Care (PAC) - Thailand
PAC’s goal is to make a sustainable improvement in the quality of life of Koh PhaNgan’s animals by providing emergency relief and nursing care to all sick and injured individuals.

Long-term objectives include:  to replace poisoning of dogs as the method of population control by the more humane method of neutering; to eradicate the rabies virus from the island, through an intensive vaccination programme.

PAC needs a continuous supply of volunteer veterinarians to help complete the surgical work.

Practical Action
Practical Action, formerly Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), were founded in 1965 to enable poor people in Africa, Asia and South America to develop and use productive technologies and methods which give them greater control over their own lives and which contribute to the long-term development of their communities.

Advice and assistance is available to individuals, organisations, institutions, governments and international agencies through publications, a technical enquiry service, project support and consultancies.

Project Abroad
Placements are available in India, Ghana and a new programme in Romania.  Volunteers will be involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortem examinations and the routine treatment of domestic animals and pets.

The aim is to improve the understanding of problems facing vets in developing countries and to give volunteers the opportunity to make an impact on the welfare of animals.

Placements are available for between six weeks and three months, or even a year, and would suit an undergraduate as a summer placement or anyone looking for a worthwhile way to spend their sabbatical.

Romania Animal Rescue
Romania Animal Rescue concentrates on spay and neuter programmes in Galati, Romania.  Often in need of veterinarians for neutering programme and help for the community care of stray street dogs.

Royal Geographical Society
Founded in 1830 to advance geographical science and geography teaching and to act as a focal point for British geographical and exploration activity.They run a library and have large map, atlas and photographic collections. RGS organise lecture series, conference and academic meetings. Arranging its own expeditions, examining and supporting others. Training and advice is given to those undertaking expeditions.

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
The RSPCA's vision is to work for a world in which all humans respect and live in harmony with all other members of the animal kingdom.

Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land
UK-registered charity providing help for the donkeys of Israel, to improve their status and promote their welfare through education.  Rescue centre based at Moshav Gan Yoshiya, near Netanya and Hadera.  Welcome voluntary help at rescue centre.

Save the Children
Founded in 1919 to strive to promote the rights of the child and to influence national and international policy and practice to achieve lasting benefits for children.

Save the Children is the UK's largest international voluntary agency concerned with child health and welfare with operations spanning 30 countries and some 100 projects in the UK.

Work overseas principally involves running long-term health, nutrition, education, community development and welfare programmes.

Soi Cats And Dogs (SCAD)
Formerly SOI Cat & Dog Rescue, SCAD is dedicated to improving the lives of dogs and cats living on the streets of Bangkok by reducing their numbers through animal birth control, education and adoption programmes.

Send a Cow
Send a Cow is a Christian charity that enables poor farmers in Africa to become self-reliant by providing them with livestock, training and advice. We work with some of the most vulnerable groups in Africa, including children orphaned by war, families affected by AIDS, and disabled people.

Skiathos Dog Shelter
Supported by the British charity Greek Animal Rescue, the shelter relies on short-term voluntary veterinary assistance – neutering and general veterinary care.  There is no permanent vet on the island.

SNIP International
SNIP International is the only UK-based animal welfare organisation specifically dedicated to promoting the neutering of stray and feral cats and dogs on a worldwide basis.

Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA)
SPANA treats more than 300,000 working animals each year through a network of 18 refuges and some mobile veterinary clinics throughout Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Syria, Mali, Mauritania and Ethiopia. Its education programme teaches children and animal owners the principles of care and respect for their animals.

Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Fiji (SPCA)
Set up to take care of Fiji’s population of cats and dogs.

Spay Panama
This US-based NGO welcomes volunteer vets, nurses and students.

Spay Our Strays (SOS)
To alleviate problem of stray dogs and cats by a programme of neutering.  Cats are returned to their home ground.  Dogs are re-homed in either Spain or Northern Europe.

Tanzania Animal Welfare Society

Tibet Charity
The Animal Care programme runs a free veterinary clinic concentrating on sterilisation and vaccination programmes for domestic pets and stray animals in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Tree of Life for Animals (T.O.L.F.A.)
The Tree of Life for Animals is a grassroots organisation in India set up to improve the abject suffering seen in stray animals residing on every street.By reducing numbers, through sterilization, providing rescue and veterinary care to those that are ailing and vaccination to prevent disease, the lives of these animals can be dramatically improved.

Tsunami Memorial Animal Welfare Trust (TMAWT) – Sri Lanka
The non-profit Tsunami Animal-People Alliance is dedicated to reducing rabies and dog bites in the disaster zone and refugee settlements of Sri Lanka by the combination of vaccination and sterilisation.

Without sterilisation, new generations of animals needing vaccination will continue to be produced.

Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW)
UFAW is a science-based animal welfare charity which regularly funds animal welfare research to find better ways of caring for animals, whether they are on farms, in zoos or laboratories, in the home or the wild.

VetAid
VetAid works alongside communities to provide long-term solutions to better care for their animals.  It trains local people to provide basic animal health care and improve livestock production systems.  It works with other agencies to help cover the full range of human and animal health needs.

Veterinaires Sans Frontiers (VSF)
VSF's vets are aiming to help the least fortunate people in the poorest areas of the world. In a lot of developing countries cattle are the most important source of healthy food.

Veterinary surgery is however in most cases non existent, thus the danger of epidemics is never far away. And exactly there lies the problem: when the herd dies, so does the village. Because of this veterinary help on the spot is a must.

Veterinary Christian Fellowship (VCF)
To unite Christians within the veterinary and veterinary nursing professions through their common loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ and to assist them in the integration of their faith into their professional lives.

Vets Beyond Borders (VBB)
Vets Beyond Borders, previously known as Vetcharity, is an Australian-based, not-for-profit, incorporated organisation. They co-ordinate and run veterinary based animal welfare and public health programs in developing communities of the Asia and Pacific region.

An important part of their projects is the training of local veterinary and para-veterinary staff to ensure that the work can continue and that the benefits for the animals and communities are ongoing.

Vetwork UK
Vetwork UK is a charity set up by a group of veterinarians with an interest in community-based animal health and welfare projects. This website is a place for sharing ideas and field experiences on an informal basis.

VIDA
US and Costa Rica based organisation. Provides free spay/neuter clinics and runs humane education programmes.  Offers volunteer programmes in several countries in Central America.

Volunteers in Irish Veterinary Assistance (VIVA)
VIVA is an Irish non-governmental development agency. It is a non-sectarian non-profit organisation whose main aim is to encourage and promote sustainable development in agricultural projects in under-developed countries.

There are programmes in Kosovo, Tanzania and Kenya – to combat Hydatid disease, to feed livestock and to educate local farmers.

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)
VSO recruits and posts overseas people with relevant skills and qualifications to work for up to two years in the fields of technical trades, education, agriculture, health care, technology, social and business development.

Wildlife Information Network (WIN)
Supporting wild animal health, welfare and conservation by facilitating and improving the care, treatment and husbandry of wild animals through education, research and sharing of information.

World Animal Net (WAN)
World Animal Net is the world's largest network of animal protection societies with consultative status at the UN. They work to improve the status and welfare of animals with over 3,000 affiliates in more than 100 countries.

World Association for Transport Animal Welfare and Studies (TAWS)
The aim of TAWS is to promote improved management, health and welfare of transport and draft animals.

World Horse Welfare
Operating internationally, World Horse Welfare, formerly the International League for the Protection of Horses, is one of the world’s leading equine welfare charities and improves the lives of many of these horses.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
WSPA promote cooperation between animal protection societies on an international scale, and promote the conservation and protection of animals in any part of the world.

WSPA campaign to end abuses in whaling, sealing, the fur trade, illegal trafficking in wildlife, bullfighting, experimentation; working to improve humane slaughter, livestock transportation, stray animal control and disaster relief.

World Vets
This US-based NGO addresses not only veterinary issues but also human health issues impacted by zoonotic diseases in developing countries.  Destinations range from Costa Rica and Peru to Romania and Southeast Asia.  They welcome volunteer vets, vet nurses and students.

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)
WWF raise money for the conservation of endangered wild animals, wild plants and wild places, and to promote the wise use of the world's natural resources.

Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS)
Registered UK charity which supplies veterinary resources and aid to animal charities in developing countries.  These include volunteer vets, support staff and medical supplies.

Zebra Foundation
The Zebra Foundation for veterinary zoological education has been created by the British Veterinary Zoological Society, a specialist division of the BVA, with the object of assisting veterinary surgeons, from anywhere in the world, to gain additional experience or qualifications in zoo and wild animal medicine.

Zoological Society of London (ZSL) 
ZSL is a charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.
