BVA Calls for Mobilisation of Britain's Vets
14 March 2001
Pointing out that the 'countryside is shut down and the cost is rising exponentially' Mr Tyson said that 'veterinary chiefs, particularly in Cumbria and Devon, must be given maximum support to act decisively on the ground. 'Legislation and bureaucracy is choking the vets' ability to get ahead of this dreadful disease' he said. 'We need to destroy and bury as many of these poor animals on the farm without delay, as we did in 1967-68, since burning and rendering is clearly proving cumbersome. 'Extra resources are needed' said Mr Tyson.
Pointing out that 'the Minister has said there should be no constraint on action, with which the BVA agreed' Mr Tyson nevertheless asserted that 'we do not need a handful of vets from abroad when we have thousands of practitioners appointed as local veterinary inspectors here at home. Hundreds more vets can be brought into tackling the disease on farms.'
