Premier Veterinary Award

The Dalrymple-Champneys Cup and Medal, awarded "to mark and recognise work of outstanding merit which it is considered will encourage the advancement of veterinary science", were presented at the end of the BVA's Annual Congress in Stratford-upon-Avon.

- The first Dalrymple-Champneys Award was made at the Association's 1934 Annual Congress and was presented by Sir Weldon Dalrymple-Champneys as a mark of the esteem with which he held the veterinary profession. The object of this award is that a presentation be made to a member of the Association to mark and recognise work of outstanding merit which it is considered will encourage the advancement of veterinary science.

DR ALEX DONALDSON
Dr Alex Donaldson recently retired as Head of the Institute for Animal Health's Pirbright Laboratory, the OIE/FAO World Reference Laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, where he has worked for most of his career. His main research areas have been the aerobiology, epidemiology and pathology of FMD, although he has also worked on other diseases, such as Aujeszky's disease and rinderpest. In the course of his career, he has published more than 180 scientific papers and earlier this year was awarded the 2002 Pfizer award for 'outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the origin and treatment of bovine diseases caused by micro-organisms'. At an international level, he has held a number of posts, having served, for example, as Secretary of the Office International des Epizooties FMD and other Epizootics Commission, and as Chairman of the Research Group of the Standing Technical Committee of the European Commission for the Control of FMD.
