BVA Congress 2003 - Contentious Issues Plus

05 August 2003

The Opening Ceremony on Thursday evening will feature addresses by the Opener, The Lord Sewel CBE, the Senior Vice-Principal of Aberdeen University and former Scottish Minister for Agriculture and the BVA President Mr Peter Jinman.

The main Congress programme for Friday and Saturday features two parallel sessions. The political forum, 'Contentious Issues - For the Record', will address some of the major issues currently affecting the profession while the 'In Practice' programme will tackle veterinary clinical problems in a practical and case-orientated manner.

Friday's 'For the Record' programme will include 'The future of the profession - is there anything sacred in veterinary surgery?', 'Training and regulation of nurses and paraprofessionals - responsibility or need?', 'Education - who is going to fund it?' and 'Clinical audits - part of practice standards?' The simultaneous 'In Practice' programme is devoted to large animals with sessions covering 'Veterinary opportunities in beef production', 'Herd health planning for suckler herds', 'Cattle vaccination protocols', 'Natural service/cost of keeping bulls', 'Mating beef cows - can AI replace bulls?' and 'Helminth parasite control in the face of emerging anthelmintic resistance.'

Friday also features the prestigious Wooldridge Memorial Lecture, which is to be given by Professor Sir John Krebs, FRS, Chairman of the Food Standards Agency.

Saturday's 'For the Record' programme commences with 'Rural practice - is it dead?' followed by 'Is Britain prepared for the next Exotic Disease', 'Should you compromise the animal welfare of this country for politics?' and 'Large animal practitioners in State Veterinary Service programmes - present and future'. The day will finish with 'Question time at BVA Congress' featuring the Presidents of BVA, RCVS and BSAVA as well as the Chief Veterinary Officer Mr Jim Scudamore and Mr Peter Jones of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency.

Saturday is companion animal day for the 'In Practice' programme and includes presentations on 'External fixators in small animal practice', 'Practical approach to the cardiac patient: ECG', 'Diagnostic Imaging', 'The diabetic dog - diagnosis and management' and 'Tooling up for exotics'.

With its combination of politics and CPD the BVA Congress provides a unique opportunity for veterinary surgeons to extend their knowledge and make their views known. The debates at BVA Congress help to shape BVA policy and with Government and European decisions continuing to have an impact on the profession at every level, Congress provides an important opportunity for the profession to influence developments that will affect it directly.
