Veterinary Surgeons Win Travel Scholarship

Claire Millard, who has completed her penultimate year at the University of Cambridge Veterinary School, was selected as one of only three students to attend an externship programme entitled 'Food Animal Reproduction and Herd Health' at the University of California, Davis, USA during the summer. As well as participating in dairy reproduction field calls and gaining extensive practical experience with rectal palpation and computerised dairy health records, she was involved in herd health programmes for goats, sheep and beef cattle.
Nial O'Boyle MRCVS used his grant to identify and investigate new methods and concepts in the prevention of claw disease in dairy cattle. To this end, he will be spending some time this autumn shadowing the work of leading research groups in this field at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Skara and the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Nial qualified from the University of Liverpool Veterinary School in 2001 and currently works in the farm animal department of a large mixed practice in South Cheshire.

- The Harry Steele-Bodger Memorial Scholarship was established in 1953 to honour the memory of Mr Henry W Steele-Bodger, President of the BVA 1939/41, in recognition of his great services to the veterinary profession and agriculture, particularly during the war years of 1939/45. The award is only open to graduates of veterinary schools in the UK and Ireland who have been qualified for not more than three years, or to penultimate or final year students at these schools.
