The Chiron Award

01 October 2004

The Chiron Award, which marks 'outstanding contributions to veterinary science or for outstanding services to the veterinary profession, judged in either case as being of a calibre commanding international or interprofessional recognition', was presented to Mr Thompson at the Awards Ceremony following the official opening of the BVA's Annual Congress in London.

    Qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon Dublin 1961 with Honours 1964 - married Rosalie now has 4 daughters and 7 grandchildren

    Joined father's mixed practice in centre of Belfast as 3rd generation.  Moved practice in 1967 from city to suburbs to start Earlswood Veterinary Hospital.  Now one of two Veterinary Hospitals in Northern Ireland.  Now wholly small animal practitioner with one partner.
    Main Practice interests orthopaedics, spinal surgery and cardiology.

    Honorary Life Member of:  British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS), Association of Veterinary Surgeons Practising in Northern Ireland (AVSPNI) and Northern Ireland Veterinary Association (NIVA)
    1986 Winner BSAVA Melton Award for services to Small Animal Practice
    1991 Awarded OBE in Honours list for services to the Veterinary Profession.
    1994 Awarded World Small Animal Veterinary Association  (WSAVA) International Award for services to the Veterinary Profession.

    Has contributed as speaker to Congresses of WSAVA, British Veterinary Association (BVA), BSAVA, SPVS, British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA).
