Protecting the Travelling Pet
13 May 2005
The BVA Animal Welfare Foundation (BVA AWF) has produced a guide aimed at pet owners who are planning to take their pets abroad.
The booklet outlines some of the more common diseases that may be encountered outside the UK, including babesiosis, heartworm and leishmaniasis along with details of measures that can be taken to prevent them. It also explains the criteria that animals must meet under the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme as well as a reminder of the importance of contacting a vet should a pet develop any illness on their return to the UK.
Veterinary practices can obtain the ‘Taking your pets abroad’ leaflet for the waiting room in batches of 50, free of charge (although a voluntary donation to the BVA AWF towards the cost of postage would be appreciated) from the BVA agents McMillan-Scott while members of the public can request individual copies by contacting BVA direct.
