ANIMALS WORLDWIDE

Birchington

CT7 9AH
E-mail: info@animalsworldwide.org
Web: www.animalsworldwide.org
Animals Worldwide was established in June 2006 to improve the plight of stray and feral animals in tourist destinations, as well as that of working animals upon which whole families depend for their livelihoods in some of the poorest countries in the world. A key aim of Animals Worldwide is to build relationships with the tourist industry in order to harness the eyes and ears and energies of the holidaymaking and travelling public to identify both good and bad practice, to initiate action where necessary and to support those already working in the field, running small sanctuaries and organising neutering projects, for example. Through its network of some two hundred organisations and individuals worldwide and has established that there are a significant number of small and very localised animal shelters and sanctuaries operating on pitifully modest funds throughout the tourist resorts and expatriate communities of the Mediterranean, Commonwealth and beyond. The Trust supports a wide variety of projects including mobile spay/neuter clinics, the search for alternatives to the use of animals in research, poster campaigns, anti-poaching programmes, establishing a network of animal sanctuaries as well as assisting smaller groups committed to the cause of animal welfare. Special projects at a variety of sanctuaries and refuges have also been funded. The Trust is always looking to make contact with veterinarians who might be willing to work on its overseas projects. Current projects include: mobile clinic in Mauritius (1-2 year posting); mobile clinic and shelter in Turkey (short term); various shelters in South Africa (short to mid-term) – speak to Les Ward for further information.

Around 300,000 dogs and 500,000 cats live in misery on the streets of Bangkok, malnourished, diseased, unwanted and often despised. SCAD is dedicated to improving their lives and reducing their numbers through our Animal Birth Control (ABC), education and adoption programmes. Our ABC programmes focus on helping low-income communities reduce the number of strays in their area through a trap/neuter/return policy. The animals are neutered, vaccinated and treated for any ailments before being returned and we explain and show the benefits to the whole community. We have a Spay Centre on the outskirts of Bangkok where animals can recuperate after surgery. We have secure and hygienic kennel runs, high pressure running water and a tiled area for surgery protected from the elements. In inclement weather, surgery can be performed in one of the two air-conditioned portacabins that usually act as office and medical store. SCAD welcomes visiting vets to help out at our regular sterilisation clinics. (Dec 07)

History: Uganda was devastated by a long civil war. Most of the quality dairy cows died, making milk a
luxury that few could afford. In 1988 a Ugandan bishop, having seen milk surpluses in the UK, appealed
to British farmers for help. A group of Christian farmers responded, by sending not milk, but cows. The
first plane-load of cows left Gatwick in June 1988, arriving at Entebbe quarantine farm 12 hours later.
Over 300 cows were flown from the UK between 1988 and 1996. It is now Send a Cow policy to purchase
all animals in Africa.
The gift of just one cow can make an enormous difference to a desperately poor East African family, enabling them to combat malnutrition with protein-rich milk and earn an income from the sale of the surplus milk. Most of our livestock goes to women, because they are usually the poorest people in their communities and because this is the best way to ensure that help reaches the whole family. Smaller stock, such as goats, pigs or poultry are also donated. SAC now works in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Lesotho.
