BVA Overseas Group

Under the chairmanship of Laura Bowen MRCVS, the Group liaises between the BVA and veterinary associations, organisations and individuals across the developing world.  Its strength lies in its ability to network and collaborate – much of this work being undertaken through the BVA Overseas Association, an informally structured group whose members have an interest in overseas activities.

Close contact is maintained with the Commonwealth Veterinary Association, the World Veterinary Association and the International Veterinary Students’ Association – important catalysts in the international exchange of veterinary skills, education and knowledge.

The BVA travel scholarship scheme, instigated by the Overseas Group in 1983, awards grants annually to veterinary students enabling them to undertake projects in developing countries.  Recent collaboration with the World Association for Transport Animal Welfare and Studies (TAWS) and the Donkey Sanctuary has led to the development of an additional series of travel grants for students wishing to work with transport or draught animals or on Donkey Sanctuary project sites respectively.

The Overseas Group is often able to assist veterinary surgeons who are considering working overseas (in a developing country). It can provide general advice itself as well as putting enquirers in touch with colleagues who have served (or may still be serving) in a specific country or region. The Group also functions as a catalyst in locating assistance when guidance is needed urgently, at short notice.

Support is offered to those who are working overseas by corresponding with them and helping with professional queries. It has access to books and, occasionally, equipment which can be made available to projects. It functions as a network for volunteers and others, both when they are overseas and following their return to the United Kingdom.
Colleagues from overseas are welcomed to BVA headquarters and assistance is given with organising programmes during their stay in the UK.

The Overseas Diary provides a summary of recent overseas activities and forthcoming events.

See the Worldwide index page for further information and guidance on overseas-related issues.

Helena Cotton coordinates the work of the BVA Overseas Group and she can be contacted at BVA on tel: +44 (0)20 7636 6541 or email:  helenac@bva.co.uk
