BVA launches partnership with Grads to Vets to support new vets entering clinical practice
BVA has announced a new partnership with graduate support specialist Grads to Vets to help young vets to realise their potential when they enter the workplace.
Grads to Vets is a year-long graduate scheme designed by recent graduates to enable new vets to thrive in practice. It provides graduates with comprehensive support, consisting of a mentor outside of the practice, training with a clinical coach within the practice and peer group networking and support. Graduates on the scheme can also access a tailor-made CPD programme, covering clinical and non-clinical topics through attendance days, local evening talks and online courses.
Under the terms of the partnership, announced today (20 September) at BVA Members’ Day in York, the scheme will include BVA membership, enabling those vets included to also gain access to the range of support services BVA provides its members.
There has been growing concern within the veterinary profession about the level of support for graduates when they first start work in clinical practice. Recent statistics (Voice of the Veterinary Profession Survey, Spring 2017) found that amongst vets in their first veterinary role only around three in ten (30%) said that they had received an official induction when they started work.
Commenting on the new partnership BVA President, John Fishwick, said:
“BVA exists to support and represent the veterinary profession, and we know from our Voice of the Veterinary Profession Survey and anecdotally that new graduates are particularly in need of support as they first enter practice. We have been looking for ways in which we can best help vets at the beginning of their career and we believe that Grads to Vets provides an excellent 360⁰ package to make sure young vets can embark on the first job feeling inspired and confident.
“We look forward to bringing this scheme to our members and to promoting this fantastic service so that we can help both new graduates and employers work together to make those first years in practice a success.”
Grads to Vets Managing Director, Dr Lizzie Bewsey-Dyke, said: “We share a lot of our core values with BVA and so it is wonderful to be able to announce this partnership. We know that together we will be able to grow the scheme more effectively while still providing the same high quality programme and in so doing provide more graduates with the support that they so clearly want and need. By providing this added support network and specially designed CPD programme we aim to equip graduates with the skills they need to manage stress, feel clinically confident and become productive and settled members of the team. This will inevitably be hugely beneficial to both the graduates and their practices.”
