What insurance do I need on my EMS?

Extra-mural studies (EMS) is designed to be a trial run of your life as a qualified vet, and step one in developing the clinical skills, which will underpin your future career. Of course, a veterinary practice (or other places of work for your EMS) isn’t a risk-free environment – so it’s best to make sure you have the right insurance protection in place.

To help you, our insurance partners Lloyd & Whyte, have broken down the recommended cover for your EMS and who needs to arrange it.

Public Liability Insurance

What does it do?

Whilst you’re acting on behalf of the business, this covers the cost of a claim made by a member of the public for injury or damage to their property.

Who arranges it?

Your EMS practice/ work placement should have cover for this under their business insurance.

Personal Liability

What does it do?

Covers compensation if you’re directly responsible (in a personal capacity) for injuring a third party or for causing damage to property during your EMS.

Who arranges it?

You; it’s automatically included in the EMS Insurance as part of your BVA student membership.

Employers Liability Insurance

What does it do?

Covers the cost of compensating employees who are injured at or become ill whilst undertaking business activities.

Who arranges it?

Your EMS practice/ work placement should have cover for this under their business insurance.

Personal Accident Cover

What does it do?

Provides compensation to you if you sustain certain injuries or disablements whilst on your EMS.

Who arranges it?

You; it’s automatically included in the EMS Insurance as part of your BVA student membership.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

What does it do?

Covers the cost of a claim relating to professional services – e.g. injury to an animal.

Who arranges it?

Your EMS practice/ work placement should have cover for this under their professional indemnity insurance.

Travel Insurance

If you choose to do your EMS abroad, it’s very wise to take out travel insurance to cover your personal belongings and any expensive medical bills. And, be careful to arrange a policy that covers you whilst carrying out occupational activities. Lloyd & Whyte can arrange this for you.
