Background: Pet birds are increasingly presented for veterinary treatment. The limited range of licensed antibiotics available for treating avian species, alongside having to comply with additional legislation relating to use of veterinary medicines in food-producing species, means that treating bacterial infections in pet birds can be challenging. Additionally, antimicrobial resistance is a significant public health issue and so responsible use of antibiotics by the veterinary profession is of vital importance.

Aim of the article: This article outlines the issues affecting antibiotic choice in avian species, the relevant legislation and discusses the approach to antibiotic use for common conditions in avian species.
