Periodontal disease is associated with cardiac disease in dogs

• What did the research find?

Of the 136 dogs included in this study, 75 were diagnosed with periodontal disease (PD). Increasing age was found to be a risk factor for the development of PD in these dogs, with PD being more prevalent in small breed dogs. However, sex and reproductive status did not appear to be associated with the development of PD. A statistically significant association between PD and cardiac disease was observed, but no significant relationship was observed between PD and renal disease or hepatic disease.
