When Steve Carter takes his dog for a walk in the woods near their home, he always has an eye out for a particular bounty of the forest.

‘I relax myself by finding fallen pieces of branch or root and by use of a whittling knife and a loop hoof knife I fashion these spoons,’ explains Steve, the director of Priority Veterinary Surgeons in Reigate.

‘It’s easy to get totally engrossed in a bit of ordinary-looking wood, and in half an hour or so uncover a thing of unexpected beauty, while using one’s surgical craft skills. In addition, you have a gift to give away to someone.’
