More flexible working needed to retain staff

Everyone acknowledges that one of the issues we as a profession face is long working hours. People talk of the impact this has on stress and work-life balance and we must address and improve this for everyone. However, rather than focus on this being a big issue for everyone, I'd like to draw attention to one group of the profession – those with children – who are suffering.

We need to acknowledge that these long hours are incompatible with child care and family life. Most nurseries and after-school care providers close between 17.00 and 18.00, but most vet practices are open later than that.

It is entirely reasonable that a parent would want to collect their children and take them home by 18.00 at the latest. Assuming a parent has worked a ‘normal vet day’ starting between 8.00 and 9.00, for most children this would be a 10 to...
