DickIn Medal for military dog wounded in action

A retired military dog has been awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal – described as ‘the animal Victoria Cross’ – for his actions under fire while tackling Al Qaeda insurgents in Afghanistan. Three-year-old Belgian shepherd malinois Kuno was shot in both back legs as he tackled a gunman involved in an attack on UK and host nation forces. Kuno’s action changed the course of the attack and allowed the mission to be completed.

However, Kuno’s wounds were so severe that he had to be evacuated by helicopter and he required several operations before his condition stabilised enough to allow him to be flown back to the UK. One of his rear paws had to be amputated to prevent a life-threatening infection.
