More deer knowledge is needed

The deer family encompasses many species but it is chiefly red deer that are being kept on farms in the UK in increasing numbers. Great Britain is also unusual in having more traditional deer parks than any other nation in the world. Unlike farms, the parks are predominantly populated by fallow deer, but they also contain more exotic deer species.

Although venison consumption has been damaged by the decline in the restaurant trade in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, this is against a background of sales growing through UK grocery retail at almost 11 per cent per annum over 12 months to February 2020.1 Indeed, it is the only red meat where consumption in increasing.
