Event Description

Registration will open at 09.00, with the course starting at 9.30. The course will finish at 17.00.

Camelid ownership is increasingly popular and whilst they may not have featured much on your vet school curriculum, they feature more and more in general practice today. This hands-on course will improve your skills in dealing with crias and geriatric camelids, the two groups most frequently seen for problems.

The management of crias and critical care of the sick neonate in a field situation will be covered in detail so these patients can become some of your most rewarding cases. Good parasite management will be a focus, with specific reference to younger camelids where this is vital. For the older camelid, problems include poor dentition, maintaining good nutrition and degenerative orthopaedic issues. You’ll get tips on the management of these and, most importantly, the prevention of issues when possible.

Throughout there will be practical sessions on the handling of camelids for improved physical examinations and an enhanced understanding of normal behaviour. You’ll get to benefit from the course tutor’s expertise to develop stress-free venepuncture methods and better quality dental examination technique.

After attending this course you will be able to:

• Identify and manage the main medical problems in crias
• Recognise age-related concerns in geriatric camelids and create appropriate prevention or management plans
• Carry out a welfare-friendly dental examination and perform routine dental procedures
• Prescribe appropriate medications for camelids including an understanding of protocols for off-label usage in these species
• Perform blood samples and place intravenous catheters in alpacas.

Please note - if you want to book three courses for the price of two please call the CPD and Events Officer on 020 7908 6336.
