Event Description

Registration will open at 09.30, with the course starting at 10.00. The course will finish at 16.00.

Keeping a few chickens in the garden is becoming more popular and most vets are seeing more individual birds, with owners demanding the same high standards they do for their more traditional pets. The complicating factors of being both pet and food producing animal, can mean a chicken consult takes more time than you have to spare, searching formularies and checking the DEFRA website to offer the best service you can.

Learn how to confidently carry out a clinical examination and recognise the signs that will inform a useful differential diagnosis list. Discussions will cover options for diagnostic tests including clinical pathology and imaging plus optimising your anaesthesia and analgesia for sick chickens. Medical and surgical options for common conditions will be considered and finally you’ll look at the legal aspects of dispensing medication for backyard birds, giving a real overview to everything you need to know for a practical approach to the sick chicken consult.

After attending this course you will be able to:

• Confidently assess the sick chicken and recognise signs of disease
• Formulate a list of likely differentials and select appropriate further diagnostics
• Interpret your diagnostic tests and develop treatment protocols for common presentations
• Safely anaesthetise a chicken and provide effective analgesia
• Follow legal guidelines when dispensing medications and give responsible health advice to the owners of backyard birds.

Please note - if you want to book three courses for the price of two please call Jessica Wachtel on 020 7908 6336.
