Graduate guide: Volunteering overseas

The newly-updated BVA graduate guide is designed for students who are soon to graduate, to provide support and assistance when embarking on the next phase into professional life.

Chapter 6: Volunteering overseas

Some veterinary graduates choose to work overseas as a volunteer, on an unpaid basis or a modest salary. These postings can be short and last for only a few weeks or can extend into several years.

Time spent working overseas can be a valuable experience. In addition to providing help and expertise to places and communities where resources may be minimal or non-existent, you can personally gain a lot from working in an environment very different from what you have experienced before.

This chapter contains:

  • Do your homework
  • Prepare yourself well
  • Make sure that you are legal
  • Leave a trail
  • Stick at it
  • Contribute
