Using animals as blood donors

Using animals as blood donors

Using animals for blood donation raises certain ethical questions. Although the practice is legally permissible, it is very important that both staff and clients are aware of the risks.

We urge all veterinary surgeons to have clear practice protocols for blood donation procedures and be very clear about informed consent. The publications and links in this document may be helpful when preparing such protocols.
