Welfare at livestock shows

In response to concerns about the welfare of animals at livestock shows and questionable practices sometimes used to enhance certain features of animals in order to gain a competitive advantage, BVA’s Ethics and Welfare Group (EWG) worked with the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO) to develop a welfare plan for livestock.

BVA activity

BVA organised a meeting with ASAO, Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) and British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) in September 2012.

It was recognised that while shows are required to have animal health contingency plans there was less of a focus on animal welfare considerations. ASAO worked with BVA to produce a welfare plan for show organisers, including vets, which ensures a consistent approach to animal welfare during the pre-show planning stage. The plan has been sent to all livestock show organisers.

EWG has also developed a BVA policy statement regarding welfare at livestock shows.
