The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has responded to a new report by the Office for Students (OfS) which reveals that one quarter (29 per cent) of veterinary sciences students have reported experiencing sexual assault/violence, compared with 14.1 per cent across the entire student population.

The report provides supplementary analysis to the September 2025 OfS survey of final-year undergraduates across England, focusing on how reported experiences of sexual harassment and sexual assault/violence vary by study context and student characteristics.

Responding the report, British Veterinary Association President Dr. Rob Williams MRCVS said: “New data showing that over a quarter of veterinary science students have reported experiencing sexual assault or violence is deeply concerning. The British Veterinary Association takes a zero-tolerance approach towards all forms of harassment and abuse and urges all vet schools to take action to tackle the issue and ensure all their students feel safe and supported whilst studying at university, as well as during compulsory work placements.”

In 2023, BVA published its policy position on Extra-mural studies, Student-led Work Placements: a new vision for sustainable Extra Mural Studies, which calls for action to tackle reports of harassment and discrimination occurring during these work placements, which are a compulsory part of a veterinary degree.
