Dr Anna Hewison BVM BVS MRCVS was named Young Vet of the Year 2026. Four months on, we catch up with the farm vet to find out what winning the prestigious title means to her, how it has impacted her career, and what life has been like since taking home the award.

I still can’t quite believe that I won BVA Young Vet of the Year! I am incredibly honoured and proud, and winning this award has given me even more motivation to continue delivering the highest standard of care to my patients and helping to make positive changes on farm.

I genuinely love my job as a farm vet and find it incredibly rewarding to work alongside farmers to improve the health and welfare of their animals and make a real difference on their farms.

I’m hugely grateful to my colleagues for all their support, encouragement and the knowledge they have shared with me throughout my career so far. They have given me fantastic opportunities to learn, develop and grow, and this award is very much a reflection of that. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the veterinary profession. It is inspiring to see so many vets who are passionate about their work, committed to high standards and determined to make a positive contribution to our profession. Young vets bring so much enthusiasm, ambition and fresh perspective to the profession, and I hope we can continue to support and encourage one another to do the very best we can.

If anyone is considering nominating a hard-working colleague for this award, I would say go for it! Being recognised for hard work and high standards of care means a huge amount. It can give such a boost to confidence and motivation, while reminding us all of what a fantastic profession we are part of and how much there is to be proud of.
