New British Veterinary Association President calls for animal welfare alongside client choice to be at the heart of CMA recommendations

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) welcomes the launch of the new Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), which commences 1 January 2026 in Wales.
The Sustainable Farming Scheme aims to support farmers in the ongoing sustainable production of food, while also addressing issues around climate change and environmental sustainability. Vets will have a key role to play in ensuring the animal health and welfare aspects of the scheme are implemented effectively.
BVA President Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux said: “We all have a responsibility to tackle climate change and sustainable farming and food production plays a crucial role. The Sustainable Farming Scheme brings much needed clarity to farmers and vet teams in Wales looking to play their part. We are especially pleased to see the ethical imperative of animal health and welfare recognised as part of the scheme, as this is fundamental to farming sustainably.
“The decision for Animal Health Improvement Cycle (AHIC) to be carried out by farms’ own veterinary practice is also good news. The relationship between farmer and vet practice and the deep understanding of each farm’s animals and management practices is key to making the AHIC effective. However, training for vets will be critical and we look forward to seeing more detail on this.”
BVA Welsh Branch has been part of the Ministerial Roundtable set up to advise on the detail of the scheme and will continue to work with the Welsh Government to develop the animal health and welfare aspects of the optional and collaborative tiers.
