New report calls to ban off the shelf and unchecked online sales of pet flea and tick treatments

The report, “Paws for Concern: Pets, Parasites and Pollution”, published today, comes after our Senior Vice President Liz Mullineaux gave evidence to the committee highlighting the need for a more considered risk-based approach to the use of small animal parasiticides and the need for more research into the area.  

Whilst we know that parasiticides are vital tools in preventing, treating and protecting the health and welfare of people and animals, there’s increasing evidence some of these products are damaging to the environment.  

Many of you are concerned about this issue too: 93.5% of you who responded to our Spring 2025 Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey were concerned about the environmental impact of small animal parasiticides, 70% agreed any blanket prophylaxis was “inappropriate” and 80% agreed “there should be a lot more restrictions on the sale of small animal parasiticides”. 

It’s positive to see this report’s recommendations, which parallel many of our own: we’ve long called for more research and for a risk-based approach to be taken as highlighted in the oral evidence session by Liz. We also support calls for a ban on over-the-counter sales – it’s important pet owners have access to professional, tailored, veterinary advice on how to use these treatments appropriately, responsibly and safely when purchasing these products.
