In his lecture, Is the UK ready for major disease outbreak: Lessons in science, politics and leadership from Covid-19,Professor Van-Tam will draw on his experience responding to the pandemic to discuss how the UK Government and the veterinary profession can prepare and respond effectively to the next major animal disease outbreak.

Professor Van-Tam, said: “SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) was the largest global public health crisis in the last 100 years. It has changed the interaction between scientists, politicians and the public forever. As humans encroach further on the animal kingdom, future pandemics of zoonotic origin are inevitable; therefore it is important we learn the lesson from 2020 to apply to the future.”

The Lecture will take place on Friday 20 November, and will be a highlight of BVA’s Congress programme which includes a number of sessions exploring the profession’s resilience against continued threats from emerging and re-emerging diseases.

Other BVA Congress highlights include two dedicated sessions on the next steps following the conclusion of CMA investigation, specially created to support vets with the transition to comply with its Final Orders. The first, Hot Topic: When the consulting room gets difficult: Practical approaches to tense encounters, will deliver practical tips and advice on handling difficult conversations about cost and the second, Hot Topic: Money matters: Navigating difficult cost conversations with confidence, will explore how to handle tense situations in the consultation room.

BVA Congress is back at London Vet Show at the Excel from 19-20 November this year.
