New President of the Association of Veterinary Students (AVS) Jack Conway shares his journey and goals for the upcoming year with AVS.
Growing up, I never really knew what I wanted to do. At one point, I thought I'd end up in the tech sector, as in my teens, I was a professional video game player. However, my desire to work with penguins spurred me to start my vet school journey.
This was also boosted by my teachers and family consistently saying that I "wouldn't be able to do it" or that I should "think of a second choice as your grades aren't that good." I had to prove them wrong and decided to work towards becoming a vet.
The ability to make a change. I've had my ups and downs during vet school – issues in my personal and university life – and I want to make sure nobody else goes through the same problems. I want everyone to have the best and smoothest time through vet school. I'm also looking forward to meeting people within the industry, seeing their work, and hopefully helping further someday.
My main goals are to rebuild AVS after COVID and help change the EMS system to fit the modern-day veterinary degree.
During COVID, AVS' membership and knowledge was significantly reduced. Many freshers and younger years don't even know what a Sports Weekend is!
Get involved! You never know how much of a change you can make unless you get involved. Whether that's with AVS, another society, or your student union. The future of the veterinary industry is students, so make sure your voice counts.
