Recent graduate and BVA Ethics and Welfare Advisory Panel member Safi Kader discusses her experience on a BVA committee and why she encourages others to take the leap and apply.
When I graduated as a vet, I never imagined I’d be sitting in meetings shaping discussions that impact animal welfare on a large scale. But here I am, Safi the new graduate vet from a minority background, feeling heard, valued, and respected within BVA.
Like many new graduate vets, I was focused on adjusting to life outside university. Applying for a position on the BVA Ethics and Welfare Advisory Panel wasn’t on my radar, it felt like something reserved for more experienced professionals. However, when I saw that the application process was blind, it made all the difference. For the first time, I felt able to apply without fear of bias. My experiences, perspectives, and passion would be judged on their own merit, not my background, name, or circumstances. That sense of inclusivity encouraged me to take the leap, and I’m so glad I did.
Walking into my first meeting, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Whether my contributions could be meaningful or whether I would feel out of place. But any nerves quickly disappeared when I realised this space wasn’t just welcoming, it was safe. My opinions were listened to, my perspective valued, and I wasn’t just there as a token voice, I was part of the conversation.
The Ethics and Welfare Advisory Panel tackles key issues affecting vets and animals alike. From ethical dilemmas in practice to policy decisions that shape the future of animal welfare, our discussions directly impact the profession. Being part of these conversations has shown me how much we can achieve when diverse voices come together.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being on the panel is the chance to work alongside people with a breadth of experience. Every meeting is a learning opportunity, not just in ethics and welfare, but in leadership, communication, and understanding the wider veterinary landscape. The mix of perspectives is invaluable, and I constantly gain new insights.
